History of St. Michael School

​Founded in September 1913 under the direction of the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, St. Michael Academy opened its doors as a cornerstone of the Catholic education in Livermore.

Since its beginning, St. Michael School has been an integral part of St. Michael Parish. From the vision of our founding pastor, Father Patrick Power, to our current leadership, the school has remained deeply connected to the parish’s mission — serving as an essential part of the teaching ministry of the Catholic Church.

The original school building included classrooms, living quarters for the Dominican Sisters, and a small boarding area for young girls from nearby ranch families. As the community grew, new classroom buildings were added to serve students in Grades 1 through 8, while the original structure was transformed into the St. Michael Education Center, home to Faith Formation, a library, a technology lab, and administrative offices.

In 1988, St. Michael School expanded once again with the introduction of a full-day Kindergarten, providing a strong foundation for early learners. A new, modern Education Center was constructed in 2003–2004, preserving the spirit of the original building while enhancing the learning environment for future generations.

From 2011–2015, a comprehensive technology program was launched, introducing iPads, MacBooks, and 1:1 digital devices in the middle school. In 2015, the school added Transitional Kindergarten, K–8 Spanish program, and instrumental music (recorders), continuing its tradition of academic innovation rooted in faith.

Today, St. Michael School proudly celebrates over 110 years of Catholic education — a legacy built on faith, excellence, and community.
